Michelle Rhee For Head of the US Department of Education
Michelle Rhee's contract ended in D.C. Schools because of politics, which is a giant loss to the DC school students. Even though she made tremendous strides in improving test scores and graduation rates in just three years, she was not allowed to stay and finish the job. Teachers were offered hefty raises to forego tenure so teachers could be fired for poor performance and good teachers would be paid very well. Teacher's Union bosses fought the proposal but when teachers were allowed to vote, they voted to approve.
Georgia schools rank at the bottom. The Governors push to raise test scores resulted in widespread cheating by teachers and administrators, changing answers on student tests.
What Georgia and the United States to make changes that retain the best teachers and deselects the poor teachers. If the Unions block moves to hire and fire teachers based on performance, teachers will have to rethink their Union membership. Remember Eastern Airlines & The Auto Industry.....
The US ranks far below many other countries in education when we used to be at the top. Something big needs to happen to turn things around as we are apparently getting dumber every year. What we have been doing is not working so it is time for a bold new initiative when it comes to our schools.
If we can't have Michelle Rhee for Georgia, she should be the Head of the US Department of Education.
